Hey Learners! šŸ“š They say you learn something new every day, and thatā€™s true.. if youā€™re a Waivly Learn reader.

Itā€™s that time of the day where you get to learn something brand new or level up your knowledge and skills on a topic youā€™ve already started to explore.

Today, weā€™re learning about cryptography. Letā€™s dive in!

TODAYā€™S LESSON

SECURING THE DECENTRALIZED WORLD
Understanding Cryptography in Web3

Cryptography is a fundamental part of how Web3 works, keeping data secure and trustworthy in decentralized systems. Imagine you're sending a secret message to a friend. You donā€™t want anyone else to read it, right? Cryptography helps make sure that only the intended recipient can understand the message. In Web3, itā€™s used to secure everything from financial transactions to personal data, ensuring that your information stays private and unaltered.

The first concept to understand is encryption. There are two types: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric encryption is like having a locked box with a single key. Both the sender and receiver share the same key to lock and unlock the message. But, if someone else gets hold of that key, they can unlock the message too. Asymmetric encryption is a bit more secure. It uses two keysā€”a public key and a private key. The public key encrypts the message, but only the private key can decrypt it. This method is much safer because even if someone gets the public key, they canā€™t decrypt the message without the private key.

Another important tool in cryptography is hashing. Hashing is a way to turn data into a unique string of numbers and letters. Itā€™s like putting your message through a blender, and what comes out is a completely unique code. A popular hashing function used in Web3 is SHA-256. Itā€™s used in blockchain to ensure data hasnā€™t been tampered with. When you create a block in the blockchain, itā€™s hashed, and that hash links to the next block. If someone tries to change the data in one block, the hash will change, and everyone will notice the tampering.

Digital signatures are also crucial for verifying transactions. When you make a transaction on the blockchain, you "sign" it with your private key. This digital signature proves that the transaction came from you and hasnā€™t been altered. Think of it like signing a letter to show itā€™s genuinely from you. In Web3, digital signatures eliminate the need for a middleman to verify your identity, making transactions faster and more secure.

Together, these cryptographic methodsā€”encryption, hashing, and digital signaturesā€”work hand-in-hand to keep Web3 systems secure. They ensure that data remains private, accurate, and tamper-proof. This is especially important in decentralized networks, where thereā€™s no central authority overseeing everything. Instead, users rely on cryptography to verify transactions and maintain trust within the system.

In the world of Web3, where control is distributed and thereā€™s no central authority, cryptography is the key to security and trust. Itā€™s not just about keeping your information secret, but also ensuring that everything is authentic and untampered with. Whether itā€™s securing a financial transaction or verifying the integrity of a smart contract, cryptography is the invisible force that keeps everything running smoothly and securely.
